Brighton's
'Make A Change' Challenge

    Engage

Learn, Discover, Change

Small actions add up to big solutions. This first step makes you part of the solution.
Make the link between yourself, your actions and the solution. There are many valuable sources of information out there and it is we as individuals who will shape a positive future for us all. Are you ready to challenge your habits and start doing things differently?

    Bright Ideas

Change your light bulbs
Yes, they look a bit funny but they make sense. Energy Efficient Light Bulbs are efficient. If everybody in the UK changed 1 lightbulb, we could close a power station. For every bulb you change you will save 82% on your lighting bill!! Efficient bulbs are now very cheap and last for much longer, so they pay for themselves in no time at all. Change all your bulbs, save a packet and slash your energy use.

    Make The Switch

Change your Energy Supplier
Switch to a clean renewable energy supplier. Burning coal in many of our old power stations churns out many millions of tonnes of carbon emissions each year. Wind and solar power do not generate any pollution. In only five to ten minutes you can switch to a renewable supplier like Ecotricity who invest your money into new renewable projects across the UK.

Press That Button

Love Off
Only use as much as you actually need. Switching off lights & appliances when you’re not using them might seem tedious, but if everyone does it, over time it has a huge impact. It also saves you money! TV’s on standby currently cost the nation a whopping £50 million a year. A cheap plug-in-device can easily monitor your energy use tellling you just how much your appliances use.

    Hot House

Smart Heating
Try only turning the heating on when you actually need it. It’s amazing how much of the time it’s not really necessary! Also try switching off radiators in rooms that aren’t being used and save yourself £££ of wasted energy.

    Good Food

How far has it come?
By what means? How was it made?

Certain foods generate more emissions in production than others. Eating meat & dairy products, for example, tend to generate relatively large quantities of emissions, while eating locally grown organic produce generates less. Supermarkets move goods through many different warehouses en-route to the shelf - miles & miles of transportation - bad news for global warming and totally unnecessary! Learn to grow your own!

    Make Your Mark

You are a citizen
Don’t forget to vote. Even if you think it’s not worth doing, think again. The world wasn’t made in a day.
Changes can be slow, but we must all be strong and have elected leaders we can trust and communicate with. Your MP and local Councillors are there to serve you and will respond to your questions, but you do have to ask!
If you don’t get the answers you want, vote them out, or stand for Parliament yourself!

    Home Heat Home

A little bit of insulation goes a long way
In Brighton & Hove 46% of our emissions come from our homes. If your house is well insulated, it retains heat in the winter and keeps it cool in the summer. Insulation is cheap compared to the cost of the extra heating and there are even council grants to pay for it!

    Break The Habit

Leave the car at home
70% of all car journeys are under 5 miles and 45% are less than 2 miles! We all need to get around and it is easy to find ways of using the car less for short journeys. Keep a log of all the journeys you make and see which ones could be done by foot, bike, bus or train. Cycling in the city is growing rapidly. It keeps you trim & energised!
Less car equals a better you!

    Fly Bye

In Training

No Frills. Don’t fly when there is an alternative.
Don’t fly to Europe or within the UK.
