campaigns

There has been plenty of research that shows how the most successful campaigns are those which engage the individual in the issue. At BrightonClimateChange.Org we decide on the most effective means of obtaining results from an action or event. Our main aim is to engage as many local people as possible on the issue of climate change.

'Make A Change'

The
'Make A Change' campaign is all about empowering people like you and me to feel like part of the solution by considering their personal emissions.

Small Things = Big Difference
Be part of the community looking at their own lives and finding out just how easy it is to Make A Change.

Get Political

Write to your MP and tell them that the UK MUST address climate change realistically. They may well say they are doing something about it, but ask them how building new roads and accepting airport expansion as important to our future fit in with reducing carbon output.

Also ask why £20+billion will be spent building nuclear power plants to supply only a small fraction of our energy and necessitate the use of fossil fuel use for the next 20 years during their construction. £20+billion provides a lot of renewable infrastructure.

In conjunction with Friends Of The Earth's 'Big Ask' Campaign, we are actively lobbying local MP's on these issues. Help put the pressure on and if they don't listen, vote them out!

Our local MPs are:
Celia Barlow - Labour MP, Hove & Portslade

Des Turner - Labour MP, Brighton Kemptown

David Lepper - Labour MP, Brighton Pavilion

Food Miles

Addressing the emissions generated in the production and transportation of food is very important to the Low Carbon future of our city.

A common misconception is that the emissions from food are simply that of their transportation. In fact it is important to consider the production of food as well. Organic produce uses far less energy than conventionally grown crops, is better for you and the land. Packaging also contributes heavily to the footprint of Supermarket food.

Why do we need fruit and vegetables to be flown from Kenya, New Zealand, Australian and the USA?
Why buy wine from Australia, when there are plenty of great British and French wines available with much lower carbon footprints? Why Eat New Zealand Lamb, when British farmers and suffering a decline in demand?

This practice has to stop and we the consumers have the power to stop it by choosing alternatives.
We recommend buying locally grown, organic and seasonal food without all that plastic packaging!

Patio Heaters

Using patio heaters is not acceptable.
The average emission of CO2 per heater is around 3.5kg per hour - the same that a train passenger is responsible for when travelling for 140km or a car journey of 35km.

We are providing pubs, clubs and restaurants with basic information about Patio Heaters to make sure staff members and the public are aware of their polluting nature and discussing with breweries and pub owners about ways to minimize Patio Heater use.
